CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF RADIO DRAMAS

There are a number of codes and conventions radio dramas all have in common.

Sound /sound effects

All radio dramas have to use sound and sound effects as sound works just as good as visuals when creating a certain atmosphere or scene. In all three, dark passenger, everyday time machines and the troll of stoney brook use not only speech but sound to illustrate what is happening. In dark passenger they create the scene of being in a car by using  the sound of a radio and brake noises. Stoney brook also uses a mixture of sounds to create visuals such as, loud music and people which tells us there’s a party, they use footstep when someone is walking and the sound of an engine when he gets in the car. They also make use of sound in everyday time machines as we hear things such as, a phone ringing, a busy street with people talking to illustrate the scene and they created the atmosphere of a restaurant with people talking and cutlery clinking. What these three have in common is that they all need sound and sound effects so the audience can visualise the scene without having to see a thing and they need sound to create a scene.

Music

The most common form of music in these three use a guitar. They use these to express both emotions, happiness and fear. In Dark passenger, they use a deep sounding guitar to add mystery and suspense. In everyday time machines, they use music to make it emotional by playing a slow piano and in The Troll Of Stoney Brook, they use guitar music to make it more spooky. Music conveys the atmosphere the creator wants to give in audience and in most radio dramas there is music to set the feeling.

Characters

In a radio drama, you need characters to act out the story. Each of these radio dramas has 2 or more characters both male and female. With having characters you can still have a narrator to occasionally tell the story.

Narrator

In all three the narrator is male and this is common for radio dramas. They often have deep voices. The narrator in these stories explain the setting and the characters emotions so the audience can get a better understanding.
